Whether through the reflection in the mirror or the presence of another kind of duplicate, double, or shadow, the encounter with oneself is always an irreparably missed encounter: it is never oneself that one meets, but the other—the intimate and destabilizing stranger that each person carries within and with whom one is forced, despite everything, to cohabit, negotiate, and live.
